US airstrikes in Somalia kill many Islamic State militants

(CLO) The US military conducted airstrikes in Somalia on February 1, targeting a senior planner of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) as well as other members of the group.

President Donald Trump said he ordered airstrikes and many militants were killed without civilian casualties.

“These killers, who we found hiding in caves, threatened America and our allies,” Mr. Trump said in the Truth Social post.

He asserted that the airstrikes destroyed their hideouts and killed many terrorist extremists "without harming civilians in any way".

He also stressed that the US military has been targeting this target for many years but "(former President Joe) Biden and his cronies did not act fast enough to complete the mission. I did! The message to ISIS and all others who want to attack Americans is 'WE WILL FIND YOU AND WE WILL KILL YOU!'"

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the airstrikes took place in the Golis Mountains in northern Somalia. Initial assessments showed that many gunmen were killed and no civilian casualties were reported.

Somali authorities confirmed that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud had been informed of the attack and expressed support for the US in the fight against terrorism.

A Somali government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, stressed that the country cannot become a safe haven for terrorists, adding that the impact of the airstrike was still being assessed.

Mr. Hegseth said the operation had degraded IS's ability to conduct attacks and sent a clear message that the United States was ready to destroy any threat to national security.

He also stressed that these airstrikes are part of the Trump administration's overall strategy to protect the United States.
