Jeff Bezos surpasses Elon Musk to regain world's richest throne

VnExpressVnExpress05/03/2024

After 3 years, the founder of Amazon is again at the top of the global billionaire rankings, with assets of 200 billion USD.

According to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Jeff Bezos is now worth $200 billion, $2 billion more than Elon Musk. This is the first time Bezos has returned to the richest position on the planet since 2021. The gap between Musk and Bezos's assets was at one point as high as $142 billion, then gradually narrowed.

At the close of trading on March 4, Tesla shares fell more than 7%. This development caused Musk's assets to decrease by 17.6 billion USD in just one day. Since the beginning of the year, he has lost more than 31 billion USD, when Tesla shares fell 24%.

Bezos' fortune also fell on March 4, but only by $500 million. Overall, the Amazon founder has added $23.4 billion since the beginning of the year. Amazon shares have doubled since the end of 2022 and are on track to hit a new all-time high.

Over the past year, the world's richest person has changed hands. In May 2023, Musk surpassed LVMH boss Bernard Arnault to take this position. Arnault was previously the richest person on the planet thanks to the luxury goods boom that exploded during the pandemic, pushing LVMH shares up.

Musk’s position was further threatened earlier this year when a Delaware court ruled against Tesla’s massive payout package, worth more than $50 billion.

The world’s richest people are constantly changing, depending on market conditions. Musk and Arnault have both seen their fortunes increase significantly since 2020. A report earlier this year by the non- governmental organization Oxfam found that the five richest people on the planet have increased their wealth by 114% in the past four years, to $869 billion.
