Reuters reported that Ilya Espino, Deputy Director of the Panama Canal Authority, said that restrictions on daily ship traffic and maximum water depth for vessels (in place since the beginning of this year) are expected to remain in place for at least another 10 months due to the ongoing drought.
According to Espino, extending these restrictions will help the Panama Canal maintain its water levels before the next rainy season. It is currently peak season for the canal as Christmas approaches and goods are transported rapidly.
To alleviate congestion that had exceeded 160 vessels earlier this month, the canal management recently opened two additional passage slots per day for unbooked vessels. As a result, the backlog has decreased to 115 vessels as of August 24th.
