Nothing is impossible.
To find the most representative match of the northern qualifying round of the 2nd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament - 2024 THACO Cup, the play-off match between Dai Nam University and Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports deserves to be the number one candidate.
Because on the rollercoaster of emotions that the two teams experienced on the afternoon of March 5th, the very essence of student football was showcased.
The joy of the winner...
...and the sadness of the losers made for a very emotional playoff match.
Despite being considered significantly inferior in terms of both tactical experience and player quality, the Dai Nam University team, with their sound strategy and unwavering determination, posed a truly formidable challenge to the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports. Not many teams in the student football arena can push the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports team into such a corner, forcing them to struggle to find an equalizer and then chase the score, not even the Thuy Loi University team. But, a relatively new team in the student football scene like Dai Nam University managed to do just that.
However, the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports team also had a "stage" to prove their mettle. This was in the second half, when they had to play with 10 men against 11 (the goalkeeper received a red card), and then down to 9 against 11 after a player was injured but all substitutions had been used. Yet, Coach Pham Minh's players still played with great effort. The persistent effort and burning desire of the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports team made it clear to viewers that there was no difference in numbers between the two teams, even though they were only two players short.
In a heated match under the sweltering Hanoi afternoon sun, the balance of power shifted constantly. The Dai Nam University team went from weak to strong, taking the lead and playing with a man advantage, while the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports team, initially stronger, became the underdog before staging a spectacular comeback.
In football, nothing is impossible.
But the best and most emotional aspect of student football doesn't lie solely in its technical aspects. It's the spirit of the youth and students. The image of the coaching staff and players shouting themselves hoarse on the sidelines to encourage each other, the passionate and emotional celebrations of the winning team, and the bitter tears of the losing team on the Thuy Loi stadium are the "aftertaste" of a complete football feast. It has everything: joy, anger, love, hate, professional drama, penalties, red cards, comebacks, smiles, and tears...
All of this speaks volumes about the beauty of student football, with its dedication, desire for victory, youthful energy, and the precious innocence of these "non-professional" players. The Vietnamese Youth and Student Football scene is a rollercoaster of emotions, taking fans from one extreme to another on a pendulum. And the finals in Ho Chi Minh City from March 15th to 31st promise many more exciting matches.
Class speaks for itself.
The two teams that qualified for the Northern regional round of the 2nd Vietnam Youth and Student Football Tournament - 2024 were the Hanoi University of Water Resources and the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports. These are also two of the three teams representing the North in the 2024 finals. This shows that in student football, although drama can appear in any match, experience and composure are the guiding principles to glory.
The team from the University of Water Resources overcomes difficulties.
The Water Resources University team convincingly defeated the Phuong Dong University team (7-0), the National Economics University team (4-0), and beat the extremely strong opponent, the Bac Ninh University of Physical Education and Sports team (1-0).
Meanwhile, the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports team defeated the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering team (4-0), the Phenikaa University team (6-0), and beat the Dai Nam University team with a score of 5-4 on penalties, after a 3-3 draw in 80 minutes.
There were easy matches, and there were also hard-fought ones, but after all, these two teams are the strongest and most deserving representatives to participate in the final round. After many years of competing in student football, the Hanoi University of Water Resources and the Hanoi University of Physical Education and Sports will be strong contenders for the championship this year.
