On February 1, 2024, at the 4th ASEAN Digital Ministers' Meeting (Singapore), the Digital Agriculture platform was honored with a Silver Award at the ASEAN Digital Awards 2024, one of the region's largest awards in the IT sector.
The ASEAN Digital Awards - ADA (formerly the ASEAN ICT Awards - AICTA) is one of the largest and most prestigious awards for software and IT solutions from ASEAN countries. Held annually since 2012, the awards are judged and evaluated based on rigorous criteria by a panel of judges consisting of leaders from the Ministries of Information and Communications of the 10 ASEAN countries.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuyen, Deputy Director of the ICT Industry Department (Ministry of Information and Communications), and a judge of the ADA 2024 award, said that since the award was first organized under its old name, ASEAN ICT Award - AICTA, in 2012, Vietnam has won many high awards, but this year marks the first time the Vietnamese delegation has achieved the highest ranking. During the final judging round of the ASEAN Digital Award 2024 in Singapore, international experts highly appreciated Vietnam's digital technology products and solutions.
In addition to leading the delegation of businesses with products that reached the final round to Singapore for the final competition, the support activities for Vietnamese digital technology businesses to participate in the ASEAN Digital 2024 competition by the group of officials from the Ministry of Information and Communications began about 6 months prior, when the award was launched and applications were accepted.
Having passed the application screening, the domestic evaluation round by the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communications, and the preliminary round by the international judging panel, MobiFone's digital agriculture platform - mobiAgri - became one of the four Vietnamese nominees to participate in the Final Round (presentation) in Singapore on January 31st.
Competing in the Digital Inclusivity category, mobiAgri received high praise from the judging panel, which included representatives from 10 ASEAN countries and 3 guest countries from Japan, China, and South Korea. This was due to mobiAgri's many outstanding and effective features for farmers. Specifically, mobiAgri features AI-powered crop health monitoring, supporting the diagnosis and treatment of pests and diseases with the ability to identify over 5,000 different crop types and more than 700 harmful agents and pests. In addition, mobiAgri connects users with expert Q&A sessions, allowing for direct consultations when encountering production problems. mobiAgri also offers in-depth agricultural recommendations and weather forecasts, enabling users to create the most accurate and effective production plans.
According to a MobiFone representative, the development team has demonstrated the practical applicability of mobiAgri through impressive product figures, despite the product only being launched at the beginning of 2022.
The Digital Inclusion category focuses on projects and initiatives that use technology to promote digital inclusion and access for disadvantaged groups in society, including farmers. With this Silver award, mobiAgri affirms its role in applying technology to the agricultural sector, contributing to bridging the digital divide and improving the quality of life for farmers.
“Digital agriculture is very important in Vietnam, and as a leading telecommunications company, we are honored to be selected for the ASEAN Digital Award 2024. This recognition motivates us to maintain our commitment to supporting Vietnamese farmers in embracing the digital age. With our nationwide network, we are dedicated to prioritizing our customers, providing affordable products, and contributing to social progress,” said Mr. Hoang Thanh Phuc, Head of Agricultural Service Development at mobiAgri.
A representative from MobiFone affirmed that in 2024, mobiAgri will continue its journey of building a 4.0 Vietnamese agriculture, with a commitment to further efforts to provide innovative and effective technological solutions, helping farmers cultivate intelligently, increase productivity and income.
Up to this point, quite a few large Vietnamese businesses have announced their entry into the field of smart agriculture and high-tech agriculture, such as Hoang Anh Gia Lai, Hoa Phat, Thaco, VNPT, MobiFone, etc.
According to Mr. Truong Gia Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Digital Agriculture Association (VIDA), Vietnamese agriculture is facing significant challenges such as the ever-increasing demand for food due to population growth; the shrinking area of agricultural land due to urbanization; the strong impact of climate change; and the process of international economic integration requiring continuously higher quality agricultural products.
These challenges necessitate a continuous increase in agricultural production and improvement in quality for Vietnamese agricultural products. Therefore, the application of high technology is an inevitable trend in agriculture and a solution to address the challenges facing the country's agricultural sector.
"Digital agriculture in the 4.0 era is the most sophisticated industry of all. Agriculture touches upon the most important secrets of life: biotechnology, genetic technology, and that is digital. Thanks to the application of digital technology, agriculture will connect with farmers through smartphones. Through this, each farming household will have all the necessary information, can ask questions, and robots will answer the necessary knowledge. Previously, farmers used to catch insects by hand; they could catch them when they saw them, but they could never see all of them. To choose a safe method, farmers had to spray a lot of pesticides, making Vietnamese agricultural products dirtier and cheaper. We must research science and technology to be able to deploy a drone to fly over the fields. Specialized equipment will automatically take pictures of the field, and artificial intelligence will read those pictures, detecting the locations of insects. The computer will inform the farmer which pesticide to use and at what dosage." "The number of plants could decrease by hundreds of times," said Mr. Truong Gia Binh.
"We will practice agriculture in unprecedented ways, becoming the most modern agricultural nation, not a nation that accepts lagging behind," Mr. Truong Gia Binh emphasized, expressing his hope that Vietnamese businesses can prosper through digital agriculture.
