Restoring urban drainage system after storms and floods

After the flood, mud and garbage still blocked many manholes, causing the drainage system in some urban areas in the province to be clogged. Thai Nguyen Urban Infrastructure Development and Drainage Company Limited has urgently cleared the drainage system to bring it back to normal.

Heavy rains, along with floods from upstream, have caused many roads in the central area of ​​Thai Nguyen province, such as: Minh Cau, Hoang Van Thu, Cach Mang Thang Tam, Bac Kan , Duong Tu Minh, Luong Ngoc Quyen, Phan Dinh Phung... to be deeply flooded. When the water receded, the entire drainage system was clearly overloaded, dozens of kilometers of sewers were blocked by mud, garbage and tree branches...

As soon as the water receded, Thai Nguyen Urban Infrastructure Development and Drainage One Member Co., Ltd. mobilized all its forces to implement the solution. The spirit of “proactive, timely, effective” was thoroughly instilled in each team. Nearly 60 officers and workers were divided into many groups, closely following the scene, working through the night with a single goal: to clear the drainage system as soon as possible.

According to statistics, the entire drainage system in the central area (in Phan Dinh Phung ward) is about 100km long. Of which, more than 35km of sewers on main roads are silted up and need urgent treatment. The company has mobilized 12 specialized suction trucks - a number that seems not large, but to have enough vehicles, the unit must rent more from other sources, because part of the company's equipment is also flooded and cannot operate.

Mr. Tran Trung Hieu, a worker at the Drainage Enterprise, shared: When the floodwaters recede, we have to start working immediately. In the past few days, we have been working continuously from early morning until late at night. We just hope to clear the route soon to ease the hardships of the people.

Not only the efforts of the workers, coordination and command work were also flexibly deployed.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Deputy Director of Thai Nguyen Urban Infrastructure Development and Drainage Company Limited, said: We are both temporarily fixing the problem and re-evaluating the entire system. The first priority is the main roads, where there is a high population density. When people clean their houses, the mud will flow down again, so we will have to handle it again to ensure safety.

These efforts have quickly brought about clear results. After nearly a week of continuous work, about 70-80% of the dredging and clearing work has been completed. The water has receded, traffic has returned to normal, and people's lives have gradually stabilized.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tung, Group 1, Linh Son Ward, shared: The recent flood caused a lot of water and mud, and the drain in front of my house was clogged. However, I found the workers to be very responsible and professional, and with the support of machines, they handled the situation very quickly.

Not only dealing with the immediate consequences, the company also identified the long-term task of comprehensively inspecting and evaluating the urban drainage system. With the rapid urbanization, Thai Nguyen, as well as other developing cities, face many challenges in managing rainwater and wastewater. Regular investment and maintenance of sewer systems, manholes, and discharge gates is mandatory, especially in conditions of increasingly extreme storms and rains...
