The swimmer from Quang Tri province said he entered the race with the highest determination: "When I got into the water, I only focused on increasing my speed and being the first to cross the finish line. I always reminded myself to try my best, and today I did it," Hung Nguyen shared after his victory.
Eight swimmers competed in the final. Hung Nguyen started in lane 3 and accelerated from the very first meters. He maintained the lead throughout the race and finished first with a time of 2 minutes 02 seconds 11. Gian Christopher San (Philippines) came second with 2 minutes 03 seconds 88, while Nguyen Quang Thuan, the younger brother of former national team swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, won the bronze medal with 2 minutes 04 seconds 19.

This victory marks Hung Nguyen's fourth consecutive gold medal at the SEA Games in his specialty event and his tenth gold medal in his SEA Games career.
According to the swimmer from Quang Tri, the secret to his success lies in thorough preparation and maximum concentration: "I learned from previous competitions, even when I didn't qualify for the 2025 World Championships. Maintaining a steady rhythm, focusing on every meter of the swim, and always believing in myself were the keys to winning this 10th gold medal."

This year, before heading to Thailand for the 33rd SEA Games, Hung Nguyen competed in the 2025 Asian Championships in Singapore and won a bronze medal in the men's 200m individual medley with a time of 2 minutes 02 seconds 71. The experience from the continental competition helped him make a strong comeback and maintain consistent form, thus continuing to bring glory to Vietnamese swimming.
The 33rd SEA Games kicked off with an outstanding performance by Tran Hung Nguyen, who not only won the opening gold medal but also demonstrated his willpower, discipline, and experience accumulated over many editions of the Games.
