Tran Quy Cap Market (Dong Da District, Hanoi) is the oldest traditional market specializing in selling dong leaves in Hanoi. Here, dong leaves are sold all year round, but the busiest time is near the Lunar New Year.

On the days approaching Tet 2024, from early morning, the vendors here have been busy selling dong leaves. It is known that dong leaves here are imported from many places, with different sizes. In particular, wild dong leaves are imported from Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, and country dong leaves are imported from Thanh Oai (Hanoi), Phu Ly ( Ha Nam ).

According to the seller, wild dong leaves when wrapping the cake will give a beautiful green color, the cake will be fragrant and will not stick to the leaves when peeled. Meanwhile, dong leaves from the countryside when wrapping banh chung will give a yellow color, when peeled the leaves will stick to the cake, if you want the cake to have a green color, you must add rieng leaves.

According to traders, this year, the amount of dong leaves imported from the provinces is greater than last year. Currently, wild dong leaves cost 150,000 VND/50 leaves, country dong leaves cost 120,000 VND/50 leaves, and the string used to tie cakes is sold for 15,000 VND/bundle.

Dong leaves at the market are imported from many places, in all sizes from small to large to meet different needs of customers.

Many people rushed to the market to buy big, beautiful, green dong leaves to wrap banh chung to celebrate the traditional Tet holiday. Most of the customers were regulars at the market for many years.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tung (Dong Da district) bought 100 dong leaves to wrap banh chung. He said he has been buying dong leaves at Tran Quy Cap market for decades. "Dong leaves are more expensive this year than in previous years. I usually buy wild dong leaves because when wrapping banh chung, they will give a beautiful green color, the cake will be fragrant, and will not stick when peeled," said Mr. Tung.

Dong leaves here are also traded to all large and small markets in Hanoi. Mr. Nguyen Duc Huy said that he sells at the market in Ha Dong district (Hanoi). Today, he went to Tran Quy Cap dong leaf market to buy more than 10,000 dong leaves, the wholesale price is about 50,000 VND/bundle.
