According to the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center, at approximately 2:18 AM on December 11th, the international cruise ship Westerdam (Dutch nationality) , carrying 1,900 passengers, was en route from Quang Ninh province to Tien Sa port in Da Nang city.

When the ship was approximately 32 nautical miles northeast of Son Tra Cape (Da Nang city), a passenger (69 years old, German nationality) fell down the stairs.

The doctor on board administered first aid and found that the patient had a damaged spleen, suspected internal bleeding, and was in critical condition. The ship requested assistance in transporting the patient to the emergency room. At that time, the weather in the area was characterized by northeasterly winds of force 6 and waves of 3. But 4m.

Upon receiving the information, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center recognized the patient's critical condition (continuous internal bleeding in the abdomen) and requested the captain to have the Westerdam ship sail at full speed towards Da Nang.

At 4:30 AM the same day, the Westerdam safely docked at Tien Sa port , and the patient was quickly taken to the hospital for emergency treatment .

The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center has worked closely with relevant units and ship agents in Vietnam to organize the reception of victims when the ship docks at the port and to take them for emergency medical treatment.

The timely rescue operation once again demonstrated the role of the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center in receiving, processing, and coordinating search and rescue operations related to foreign crew members and vessels operating in Vietnam's waters of responsibility; it also showed the center's timely participation in responding to accidents and incidents at sea under the direction of the National Civil Defense Steering Committee, the Ministry of Construction , and the Vietnam Maritime and Inland Waterways Administration.
