McLaren has just set a new record for the fastest time to change tires on an F1 car, surpassing Red Bull's 1.82-second record from 2019.
The Qatar Grand Prix of Formula 1 last weekend saw a new record for tire change time. The achievement belonged to the McLaren team on lap 27, when driver Lando Norris made a pit stop.
Compared to Red Bull's previous record of 1.82 seconds in 2019, the new record is even more impressive because the racing tires are a new type (as required from 2020), larger and heavier than the tires used in 2019.
In 2023, the dry and minimum weight of an F1 race car reached 798 kg, an increase of 2 kg compared to 2022 due to technical regulations, including the use of 18-inch Pirelli tires. Typically, each race tire weighs around 9-11 kg.
F1 racing tires are fitted to the axle by a single central nut, not the five petal-shaped nuts commonly found on civilian cars. The impact wrench is also specially designed to fit, ensuring quick tire changes.
