Making a fortune from planting DH 32-29 giant eucalyptus trees on the hills of Bao Ha.

Thanks to the Bảo Hà commune's propaganda efforts on developing forest-based economic activities linked to sustainable poverty reduction, pioneering models testing the DH 32-29 eucalyptus variety – a new hybrid with high productivity and suitability for hilly and mountainous conditions – have shown clear effectiveness. Based on these initial results, eucalyptus trees are gradually becoming a sustainable economic development direction for many local households.

A bold move from a pioneering household.

Having lived on the hilly, forested land for a long time, the family of Ms. Hoang Thi Le, in Ban Khoai 3 village, was one of the first households to boldly introduce the DH 32-29 giant eucalyptus variety for large-scale planting.

Ms. Le shared: "In 2019, thanks to the promotion and support from the commune government, my family went to Bac Giang to learn about eucalyptus cultivation. Seeing that the tree was suitable, I decided to bring seedlings back and plant them on 20 hectares. A year later, we expanded to 40 hectares, and the following year to 60 hectares."

According to Ms. Le, each hectare is planted with approximately 2,000 trees, with a harvesting cycle of 5 years. To increase farming efficiency, the family intercrops corn and raises chickens, creating a short-term income source to offset care costs. This method helps to manage the entire area effectively, preventing land from being left fallow.

In 2024-2025, Ms. Le's family began harvesting their first eucalyptus crop from 40 hectares, with an average profit after expenses of approximately 100 million VND per hectare. This is a significantly higher income compared to many other forestry crops commonly grown in Bao Ha.

After harvesting, eucalyptus trees sprout a second cycle very quickly.

Besides developing her own family's economy , Ms. Le also supported five households in the village to participate in a model linked with the cooperative, increasing the total area to 100 hectares. After the 2025 harvest, these households will continue to register to expand to 150 hectares, aiming to build a concentrated eucalyptus growing area capable of attracting long-term investment from wood processing businesses.

Another positive sign is that eucalyptus wood of the DH 32-29 variety is purchased directly from the forest by businesses from Bac Ninh after harvesting, giving people peace of mind about sales and reducing transportation costs.

This plant variety is well-suited to the natural conditions and yields outstanding results.

Eucalyptus DH 32-29 is a hybrid variety with rapid growth potential and good adaptability to harsh climatic conditions and densely layered hilly soil. The trees are tall and large, with straight trunks, pointed and uniform canopies, small branches, and excellent natural pruning capabilities.

After a 5-year cycle, the trees reach a height of over 21m, a trunk diameter of nearly 15cm, high timber yield, and good wood quality. The price of processed eucalyptus wood currently ranges from 3.5 to 4 million VND/ ; raw wood is priced at around 2.5 million VND/ton.

Compared to many traditional forestry species, the Eucalyptus macrophyllus has outstanding advantages: it grows quickly, is less susceptible to pests and diseases, requires little maintenance, and is wind-resistant, making it suitable for hilly and sloping areas.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bao Ha commune, the model of planting Eucalyptus DH 32-29 is being encouraged to expand due to its high economic efficiency and strong regeneration capacity.

This eucalyptus variety requires only a high initial investment (60% of the revenue per hectare) for the first planting. After harvesting, the trees regenerate quickly, so subsequent cycles hardly require replanting, reducing costs and increasing profits.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong - Vice Chairman of Bao Ha Commune People's Committee

Based on practical assessments, the commune authorities have determined that in areas with thick soil layers, the Eucalyptus macrophyllus species has superior growth potential and yields, resulting in significantly higher economic value compared to other timber species. The commune is focusing on promoting and encouraging people to switch to this tree species to increase income and develop sustainable forest-based economy.

From the model of Ms. Hoang Thi Le's family and other affiliated households, it can be seen that the DH 32-29 eucalyptus variety not only brings high income but also opens up a new direction for the forestry industry in Bao Ha. With 150 hectares planted intensively and the potential for further expansion in the future, this eucalyptus variety is becoming a key crop, contributing to improving the lives of local people and promoting the development of a modern, efficient, and sustainable forest economy.
