On October 3, the leader of Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital said that for the first time, the hospital performed the first autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant for a cancer patient with the support of the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital.

According to Dr. Luu Hung Vu, Head of Internal Medicine Department 1, Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, female patient TTB (60 years old) was diagnosed with stage 3 multiple myeloma (a disease that destroys bone throughout the body) and was hospitalized for treatment in April 2023.

The patient was prescribed 4 cycles of chemotherapy according to the regimen. After that, the Oncology Hospital consulted with the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital and prescribed an autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplant for the patient.

The patient was given drugs to stimulate the production of peripheral blood stem cells and was transferred to the Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital to have stem cells taken and stored... Luckily, after only one collection, the patient had enough stem cells to transfuse.

"After 2 weeks of stem cell collection and storage, the patient was admitted back to the Internal Medicine Department 1, Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital. One day before the transplant, the patient received high-dose chemotherapy. On September 8, the patient received stem cells intravenously. The patient received careful care regarding nutrition and treatment," Dr. Luu Hung Vu shared.

According to Dr. Vu, after 21 days, the patient's test results showed normal white blood cell and red blood cell counts but decreased platelet counts. The patient was transferred from the transplant room to the outside. At this point, the transplant is considered almost successful. On October 6, the hospital will re-check the transplant process.

"High-dose chemotherapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are specialized techniques in the treatment of malignant diseases. Currently, there are 4 units in Ho Chi Minh City that can perform this technique, including: Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital, Cho Ray Hospital, Children's Hospital 2 and Oncology Hospital," added Dr. Luu Hung Vu.

In the coming time, Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital will continue to send professional teams to study to further improve stem cell transplantation techniques, thereby widely deploying this technique in the treatment of hematological diseases such as multiple myeloma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
