The 26-year-old cyclist from the Bahrain Victorious team crashed while descending at high speed on stage 5 between Fiesch and La Punt on June 15, after a tiring day marked by three climbs at an altitude of 2,000 meters.
The cycling community mourns cyclist Gino Maeder.
Race organizers said Maeder was found in a ravine below the road, "received immediate medical attention and was then airlifted to a hospital in Chur." But the following day, "Gino lost the battle to recover from the serious injuries he sustained," the Bahrain Victorious team said in a statement.
"Despite the best efforts of the medical staff at Chur Hospital, Gino could not overcome his final and greatest challenge, and at 11:30 a.m., we said goodbye to one of our team's best riders. Our entire team is devastated by this tragic accident, and our thoughts and prayers are with Gino's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," the Bahrain Victorious team statement added. Due to Bahrain Victorious's death, stage 6 was declared void, although the cyclists will still ride the route as a tribute.

I will miss you." Slovenian cyclist and recent Giro d'Italia winner Primoz Roglic exclaimed after hearing about the accident: "I am speechless." Former Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas shared: "I can't believe what I'm reading. It's a very sad day. My condolences to everyone who knew and loved Gino."
Earlier, American cyclist Magnus Sheffield also suffered a similar accident during the most difficult stage of the race with numerous uphill climbs. Organizers said the Ineos-Grenadiers rider was hospitalized with "bruises and concussions". On June 15th, world champion Remco Evenepoel criticized competing on such a dangerous course.
