The European Commission (EC) has announced the opening of an antitrust investigation to assess whether Google violated European Union (EU) competition regulations by using online content from web publishers and YouTube for artificial intelligence (AI)-related purposes.
The investigation aims to determine whether Google created unfair competition by imposing unreasonable conditions on publishers and content creators, or by granting itself preferential access to their content, disadvantaging other AI model developers.
The EC expressed concern that Google may have used content from web publishers to develop AI services on search results pages without adequate compensation to the publishers and without giving them an opportunity to refuse the use of their content.
The EC is also concerned about whether Google is using content uploaded to YouTube to train its AI models without compensating content creators or allowing them to refuse such use.
