Organizers announced that the live telecast of the Oscars on March 2 will "recognize those who bravely fought the wildfires."

The musical Emilia Pérez, about a drug lord who undergoes gender reassignment surgery, leads the pack with 13 nominations, followed closely by The Brutalist , an epic exploring the immigrant experience, and Wicked , the hit film version of a Broadway hit, both with 10 nominations each.

The thriller Conclave about the election of a new pope, along with A Complete Unknown about Bob Dylan's early years, both received eight nominations.

The five films mentioned above were all nominated for Best Picture, the ceremony's top prize, along with independent films such as Anora , Nickel Boys , I'm Still Here , The Substance and the blockbuster Dune: Part Two . Among them, Emilia Pérez was highly appreciated.

Timothée Chalamet – who proved to be a box office hit with Dune and Wonka – is nominated for Best Actor for his unpredictable performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown . He is up against The Brutalist star Adrien Brody, who became the youngest Best Actor winner in Oscar history at the age of 29 for 2003's The Pianist .

In the Best Actress category, all eyes were on Demi Moore, one of Hollywood's brightest stars of the 1990s, continuing her career comeback with the horror film The Substance . The other nominee was Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón, who made history by becoming the first transgender actress to be nominated for an Oscar, amidst a series of scandals stemming from her inappropriate comments about her co-stars on social media.

Zoe Saldaña, known for starring in blockbusters like Avatar, showed off her singing and dancing talents as film lawyer Emilia Pérez . She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Her competitors included Ariana Grande ( Wicked ), Felicity Jones ( The Brutalist ), Monica Barbaro ( A Complete Unknown ), and Isabella Rossellini ( Conclave ). Many predicted Saldaña would win.

Brady Corbet, director of The Brutalist, received a nomination for Best Director, competing against French filmmakers Jacques Audiard ( Emilia Pérez ), Coralie Fargeat ( The Substance ), Sean Baker ( Anora ), and James Mangold ( A Complete Unknown ).

The Oscars were first presented nearly a century ago as a way to promote the American film industry. Over the past 97 years, the industry has undergone major changes in technique, technology and artistry.
