On May 26, authorities set up a security fence around the city of Apopa and raided the hideouts of MS 13 and Barrio 18 – the two most notorious gangs in the area.

Authorities arrested dozens of MS13 and Barrio 18 members in the Valle del Sol and La Chintuc areas, seizing large quantities of heroin, hundreds of weapons, explosives, support tools and many other exhibits related to various cases.

Speaking on social network X, President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele stated that the raid was carried out after the government received information from local people, as well as intelligence information about the rampant criminal gangs in the city of Apopa, and emphasized that the authorities will continue to hunt down the remaining members of these gangs.

On March 25, El Salvador authorities also arrested dozens of members of the Gang 18 gang, after mobilizing 5,000 soldiers and 1,800 police officers to surround the organization's lair in the southern state of Chalatenango.

In August 2023, El Salvador mobilized 7,000 soldiers and 1,000 police officers to set up a security fence around the state of Cabañas to crack down on criminal gangs currently hiding there, after the Government extended the state of national emergency for the 16th time since declaring a state of emergency in March 2022 to restore security and order.
