Weightlifter Le Van Cong is participating in the 2023 World Para Powerlifting Championships as the reigning world runner-up. Le Van Cong's biggest opponent in this competition is Omar Qarada (Jordan) – the current world and Paralympic champion in the men's 49kg category.
Le Van Cong and Omar Qarada had a dramatic showdown at the 2020 Paralympic Games, both achieving a lift of 173kg. However, Omar Qarada won the gold medal due to being 100 grams lighter than Van Cong. In this rematch, Omar Qarada quickly challenged Le Van Cong, successfully lifting 171kg on his first attempt. Immediately afterward, the 39-year-old Vietnamese weightlifter impressively lifted 172kg.
In his second attempt, Omar Qarada increased his performance to 175kg. Following that, Le Van Cong successfully lifted 176kg – but the referee disallowed the goal, deeming the Vietnamese weightlifter guilty of a foul. In his final attempt, Le Van Cong demonstrated his skill by attempting the 176kg lift again and succeeding.
Omar Qarada needed to lift 177kg on his final attempt to retain his world championship title. However, the Jordanian weightlifter couldn't overcome the pressure, with two out of three judges calling fouls. Ultimately, Le Van Cong staged a comeback to win the world gold medal with a performance of 176kg.
This is the second time Le Van Cong has won a world gold medal in his career, after his first win in 2017. In addition, the Vietnamese weightlifter holds the world record in the men's 49kg category with a lift of 183.5kg.
