Bale retired more than 3 years ago. |
In an interview with GQ , the former Real Madrid and Wales star revealed that his father Frank's illness forced him to view football and life through a different lens. Bale said: "My father fell ill and it had a huge impact on my decision to retire. Nobody knows what other people are going through at home. Then I realized there's more to life than football."
Bale's final match of his career was the England-Wales clash at the 2022 World Cup. Having won five Champions League titles with Real Madrid after leaving Tottenham for a then-record fee of £85.3 million, Bale insists he has no regrets about his decision to retire.
Bale revealed that he chooses to face everything with a smile: "Either smile or cry. I choose to smile." And even though he no longer appears on the pitch, Bale believes that the moments he created in Madrid as a Welsh player are irreplaceable.
During his playing career, Bale was one of the highest paid players when he signed a long-term contract with Real Madrid. Bale had a brief stint in MLS with Los Angeles FC before retiring.
Currently, the former Spurs star tries his hand at many jobs, including the role of commentator for TNT Sports and intends to buy back his hometown club Cardiff.
