On the social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated: "On January 20, 2025, in one of my first executive orders, I will sign the necessary documents to impose a 25% tariff on all products imported into the United States from Mexico and Canada, as well as on their absurdly open border policy."
Mr. Trump said these tariffs would remain in place until Mexico and Canada tighten control over drugs, particularly fentanyl, and illegal immigration.
Regarding China, the US President-elect accused Beijing of not doing enough to stop the flow of illegal drugs across the Mexican border into the United States.
He stated: "Until they put an end to this situation, we will impose an additional 10% tariff on China, higher than any additional tariffs."
Previously, Trump pledged to end most-favored-nation status in trade for China and impose tariffs on Chinese imports of over 60% – significantly higher than the tariffs applied during his first term.
