On the afternoon of September 2nd, information from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province indicated that the unit had received information from the Forest Protection Department of Xuyen Moc district regarding the death of one person under unclear circumstances in plot 8, sub-area 28 of the Binh Chau - Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve (located in Binh Chau commune, Xuyen Moc district).
According to initial information, on the evening of September 1st, Ms. VTH (residing in Binh Tien hamlet, Binh Chau commune) reported to the commune police that her husband, Mr. NMC (38 years old), had left home on the afternoon of August 31st to cut trees but had not returned. Ms. H. also called many relatives to search for him, but no one knew where Mr. C. was.
Later, Ms. H. asked her brother to search for him, and they discovered Mr. C. dead, crushed by a tree, in a protected forest area within the Binh Chau - Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve. After receiving the information, the Binh Chau Forest Ranger Station - Xuyen Moc District Forest Management Unit sent officers to the scene to cooperate with the Xuyen Moc District Police in verifying the information.
Preliminary checks revealed that a melaleuca tree had been cut into two pieces in the area where Mr. C. was killed. Mr. C.'s body has been removed from the forest and handed over to his family for burial. The cause of the incident is currently under investigation by the police.
The Binh Chau - Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve is known to cover an area of 10,537 hectares and is the only remaining relatively intact coastal primary forest in Vietnam. The forest contains many rare and valuable timber species such as: Ba Ria rosewood, red sandalwood, honey sandalwood, agarwood, Binh Linh Nghe, and Dipterocarpus.
