IELTS score conversion rates for university admissions in 2025

With an IELTS certificate ranging from 4.0 to 9.0, candidates can convert it to 6-10 points in English when applying to university.

The Vietnam Academy of Agriculture is the only school that accepts IELTS scores from 4.0, converting them to a 6 in English. If a candidate achieves 6.0, they will be counted as 10 points when applying based on their high school graduation exam scores.

The remaining 6 universities convert candidates with an IELTS score of 5.0 or higher. Among them, the National Economics University and Thang Long University have the highest requirements. Candidates with an IELTS score of 5.5 are only counted as 8 points, while scores of 7.5 or higher are converted to 10 points.

For the high school graduation exam, if a candidate has an IELTS certificate with a score of 4.0 or higher, they are exempt from the English exam.

This year's admissions season, many schools have announced they will be using IELTS certificates for admissions. Each school has its own admissions process and criteria.

In 2025, the Foreign Trade University will have three admission methods for candidates with IELTS certificates: considering IELTS based on high school transcripts, considering IELTS based on high school graduation exam scores, and considering IELTS based on SAT/ACT/A-level scores (other international language certificates will also be considered similarly).

Specifically, the IELTS assessment method using high school transcripts is only for students in specialized programs in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Informatics, Literature, and Foreign Languages, as well as students with national or provincial awards (First, Second, or Third place) in these subjects. This method also applies to students who have won national-level science and technology awards.

The minimum score required for an IELTS certificate is 6.5 or higher. This score remains unchanged from previous years.

The National Economics University does not consider IELTS scores independently, nor does it combine IELTS scores with academic transcripts. The IELTS certificate is considered in conjunction with the scores from the National University of Hanoi's aptitude test, the National University of Ho Chi Minh City's aptitude test, the Hanoi University of Technology's thinking skills test, and the 2025 high school graduation exam scores in Mathematics and one non-English subject from the university's admission test combination.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology awards bonus points to candidates applying under the talent-based admissions program if they possess a VSTEP English certificate and other international English certificates such as IELTS, TOEFL, TOEIC… IELTS is also considered in conjunction with the score from the aptitude test.

Ho Chi Minh City University of Law plans to consider applicants from international high schools who meet the following conditions: have graduated from high school; possess an international language certificate such as IELTS with a score of 6.5 or higher; and have received a high school diploma from a foreign educational institution (this diploma must be recognized as equivalent to the level of education according to the high school education program in Vietnam as prescribed).

In addition, the school considers applicants with international language certificates or SAT scores from the US, provided they meet the following conditions: have graduated from high school; possess an international language certificate (English/ or French/ or Japanese); and have SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) scores.
