Egg shortage in the US, why are Vietnamese businesses silent about exporting?

The US has to ask many European countries to import eggs because domestic prices have skyrocketed. Fresh egg supply in Vietnam is quite abundant, but there are many reasons why most businesses are silent about this opportunity, and when asked, they are not enthusiastic.

With the US facing a shortage of fresh eggs, pushing up prices, the country is urgently looking for import sources. Many experts and businesses say that although fresh eggs are abundant in Vietnam, exporting them is not easy.

As a company with many years of experience in supplying all kinds of eggs, Mr. Truong Chi Thien - General Director of Vinh Thanh Dat Company (HCMC) - said that the company exports processed eggs such as preserved eggs, salted eggs, and recently exported frozen liquid eggs to Korea, but fresh eggs have not been exported yet.

"Processed eggs have a shelf life of 6 months to a year, while fresh eggs have a short shelf life, and can only be kept cool, not frozen for a long time like meat. Therefore, exporting to distant markets like the US is very difficult, not to mention having to satisfy quality requirements," said Mr. Thien.

According to Mr. Thien, exporting by air instead of by sea will help solve the problem of shelf life, but the selling price of eggs is low, exporting by this channel is costly, and it will be difficult to achieve economic efficiency.

Similarly, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online on the afternoon of March 15, Ms. Pham Thi Huan - Chairwoman of the Board of Directors of Ba Huan Company - confirmed that she had worked many times with partners in Singapore, Taiwan... to export fresh eggs but had not yet been able to export.

Accordingly, at this time the unit can only export processed eggs to a few markets with increasing volume.

"Because fresh eggs have limited shelf life, we only prioritize export negotiations with neighboring markets. It is possible that we can go to Singapore in the near future. If fresh eggs can be exported, the price will be good and farmers will be healthy," Ms. Huan commented.

Mr. Le Van Quyet - Vice President of the Southeast Poultry Association - said that although the domestic supply of fresh eggs is quite abundant, currently there are very few units that can export this product, especially to distant and demanding markets.

"Many demanding markets often have high quality requirements, especially fresh eggs that must be produced from chickens that have not been vaccinated against bird flu, but domestic chicken farming now almost always requires this type of vaccine. Not to mention, the shelf life of fresh eggs is only about a week, so exporting will also face many difficulties," said Mr. Quyet.

Vietnamese eggs exported to the US will have to calculate the cost

Meanwhile, many experts say that negotiating and completing procedures to export to the US will take a long time, possibly 6 months to a year, at which point the egg supply in the US may have recovered because chickens are often easily restocked quickly.

"Egg prices in Vietnam and the US are almost the same when stable, while exporting to far away places will cost a lot. Therefore, if the US restores its supply, it will be very difficult for Vietnamese eggs to compete in this market, and exports, if any, will not be effective," said an expert.
