Leading experts and LOF International Dairy Joint Stock Company are joining forces to raise awareness about eye health for Vietnamese children.
Protect children's eyes
On August 23, 2024, in Ho Chi Minh City, LOF International Dairy Joint Stock Company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Central Center for Health Communication and Education, Ministry of Health (T5G); the Central Eye Hospital; the Institute of Applied Medicine; and the international organization GMP Dairy New Zealand regarding joint efforts towards the community, for a healthy Vietnam, especially implementing activities to raise community awareness in caring for and nurturing healthy eyesight for Vietnamese children.
According to Mr. Vu Manh Cuong, Director of the Central Center for Health Communication and Education (T5G) under the Ministry of Health: " Child health care is one of the priorities in Vietnam's policy of caring for, protecting, and improving the health of the people, including nutrition and vision care. Decision 5924 dated December 29, 2021, of the Ministry of Health approving the Plan for implementing the Vietnam Health Program for the period 2021-2025 emphasizes 'increasing the rate of students being screened for vision impairment, prescribed glasses, and guided in vision training'. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2025, up to 90% of children in Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, will face the risk of myopia. "
Associate Professor Pham Ngoc Dong, Deputy Director in charge of management at the Central Eye Hospital, stated: " One of the causes of myopia is blue light. Blue light comes from various sources such as TVs, smartphones, and tablet screens. According to many studies, children's eyes absorb more blue light than adults. Excessive exposure to blue light can cause eye strain, dry eyes, blurred vision, and affect refractive development, including myopia."
Dr. Truong Hong Son, Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Medical Association and Director of the Vietnam Institute of Applied Medicine, shared: " In terms of nutrition, parents need to pay attention to supplementing nutrients containing Lutein and Zeaxanthin - two substances considered 'helpers' to enhance vision - and vitamin A - the most essential nutrient for the eyes. Lutein and Zeaxanthin play a role in creating the yellow color of the macular retina in the eye, playing a crucial role in receiving and clarifying images, accounting for up to 90% of vision."
These two nutrients are found most abundantly in dark green leafy vegetables and yellow and red fruits. In addition, supplementing with foods containing the "golden nutrient" vitamin A is also essential for maintaining the light-sensing cells of the eye, helping to keep eyes healthy. The visual development of children under 6 years old is crucial and requires additional nutrients for eye health. Therefore, this is a golden period for protecting and supplementing children's eyesight .
