This decision is based on the actual impact of the storms and floods, as well as the recommendations of telecommunications companies. "Typhoon No. 3 affected users' access to telecommunications services, and user interest in this transition is no longer at a high level," Mr. Nha said at the Ministry of Information and Communications' regular press conference on the afternoon of September 13th.
The head of the Telecommunications Department also stated that postponing the network shutdown aims to give network operators time to inform subscribers who need to switch, while also supporting people with keypad phones that integrate 4G functionality. The specific shutdown date will be announced later.
According to statistics, as of September 8th, there were 3.4 million 2G subscribers in the market, a sharp decrease compared to the 11 million subscribers in May 2024.

Mr. Nha stated that, after the new roadmap is in place, telecommunications companies will base their plans on the actual situation to shut down 2G networks in each area, ensuring the maintenance of service quality during the transition and best meeting the needs of users in maintaining service.
Previously, the Ministry of Information and Communications announced a roadmap for shutting down 2G networks. Accordingly, the discontinuation of 2G technology will be implemented in two phases. Phase 1, in September 2024, will stop service for subscribers using mobile phones that only utilize 2G technology (2G only).
For the next two years, 2G networks will be maintained to power smartphones that do not yet have VolTE calling capabilities, as well as to support IoT services such as vehicle tracking. The 2G system will be completely phased out by September 2026.
