According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Processing and Export (VASEP), in the first half of March 2024, Vietnam's pangasius exports to Canada reached US$2.3 million, a 7% increase compared to the same period last year. As of March 15, 2024, Canada had imported over US$8 million worth of pangasius from Vietnam, a 43% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Canada remains the second largest market in the CPTPP bloc for Vietnamese pangasius, accounting for 20% of the bloc's total imports from Vietnam.

Assessing the prospects of pangasius in the Canadian market, VASEP believes that, compared to other markets within the CPTPP bloc, Canadian consumers highly favor dishes made from pangasius fillets, frozen catfish fillets, and frozen pangasius fillets/slices/pieces. Citing data from the International Trade Centre (ITC), VASEP stated that in January 2024, Canada imported over 900 tons from Vietnam, worth US$2 million, a decrease of 10% in value but an increase of 28% in volume compared to the same period last year. In 2023, Vietnam was a major supplier of whitefish (mainly pangasius) to Canada, with over 9,000 tons worth nearly US$31 million.
Canada is a large consumer market with high demand for seafood products, especially pangasius. However, it is also a demanding market with strict inspections of imported goods. Furthermore, Vietnamese pangasius faces significant competition in this market from many other types of fish, particularly frozen cod and fresh or chilled tilapia.
To maintain and develop this market in the future, VASEP notes that businesses need to understand the regulations and comply with all requirements of Canadian importers; and continue to invest in improving product quality. In addition, building stable and long-term partnerships is also crucial, especially cooperating with distributors and retailers in Canada to ensure Vietnamese products reach consumers in the most effective way.
