At this session, the dossier commemorating the 650th anniversary of the death of the renowned figure Chu Van An was approved along with 48 other dossiers from 71 nominations submitted by 41 countries. The criteria for UNESCO's approval included: alignment with the ideals and mission of UNESCO in the fields of education, culture, science, information and communication; contributing to the promotion of peace , cultural dialogue, and mutual understanding among nations; and ensuring that each nominated event or figure has a wide-ranging impact.
The renowned figure Chu Văn An (1292 - 1370) is considered a teacher for all time, a brilliant educator of Vietnam, who dedicated his entire life to teaching, with a humanistic educational philosophy that did not discriminate between rich and poor, emphasizing the integration of theory and practice, and lifelong learning to acquire knowledge, work, and contribute to society. His ideas not only influenced many generations of Vietnamese people but also contributed to the development of humanistic values in the region. His educational views possessed progressive values that transcended their time and were closely aligned with the educational goals of the world today.
UNESCO has previously honored outstanding Vietnamese figures on the occasions of the 600th anniversary of Nguyen Trai's birth (1980), the 100th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birth (1990), and the 250th anniversary of Nguyen Du's birth (2015). According to UNESCO regulations, the 40th session of the General Assembly, taking place this November, will officially pass a resolution to commemorate these outstanding events and figures of the world .
