Mountaineer sets record by bringing Vietnamese billionaire Chinh Chu to the top of Everest

Kami Rita, 53, climbed the 8,849m-high mountain early on May 17, following the traditional southeast ridge route. This time he guided a Vietnamese climber, according to the Himalayan Times .

"Kami Rita has climbed Sagarmatha for the 27th time," said Bigyan Koirala, an official from the Ministry of Tourism . Sagarmatha is the Nepali name for Everest.

Nepal is home to eight of the world's 10 highest peaks, including Everest, and welcomes hundreds of explorers each spring, when temperatures are warm and winds are usually calm.

Kami Rita has been setting records since 2018, climbing Everest 22 times, surpassing the previous mark shared with two other climbers.

He first climbed Everest in 1994 and has climbed it almost every year since, except in 2014, 2015 and 2020, when climbing was halted for various reasons. In 2019, he surprised everyone by reaching the summit twice in just six days.

The Nepalese newspaper added that the person accompanying Kami Rita was a Vietnamese-American billionaire businessman.

Billionaire Chinh Chu, founder and CEO of CC Capital, stood on the world's highest peak with 27-time Everest climber Kami Rita at around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, sources said.

The billionaire guest purchased the program from Seven Summit Treks Travel Company, where Kami Rita works.

Nepal is home to eight of the world's 14 highest mountains, all above 8,000m.

Mr. Chinh Chu, whose net worth is estimated at $1.2 billion, was a senior managing director and co-chairman of Blackstone Group LLC's private equity group before founding CC Capital in 2015. He worked at Salomon Brothers in the Mergers and Acquisitions Department before moving to Blackstone in 1990.

In Vietnam, billionaire Chinh Chu is known as the husband of singer Ha Phuong, the older sister of two famous singers Minh Tuyet and Cam Ly.
