The Hien - author of famous songs "Toc em doi ga" (Rooster's Hair) and "Nhanh lan rung" (Rung orchid branch) - is in critical condition due to a serious illness.

According to his colleagues, the veteran musician is harboring many wishes. Recently, he planned to organize a celebration of the title of People's Artist - conferred by the State at the end of March. He also plans to perform a music night called The Hien and other contemporary poets published some more works.

The 69-year-old musician, from Nam Dinh , was born and raised in Saigon. Having a musical talent since childhood, he participated in the local art movement and studied intermediate vocal music. Since 1980, he has worked as a singer at the Bong Sen Song and Dance Troupe, performing many times for audiences across the country. He once sang for soldiers at the northern border, which inspired him to compose many songs about soldiers.

In 40 years of his career, he has many famous songs, such as Ponytail, Couple's Story, Nostalgia, Waiting in the Rain, Stories of Past and Present, Youth Volunteer March, Singing on the Green Farm, Question Mark. He is also known as "the soldier's musician" because many of his songs are closely associated with military life, such as Singing about you, Wild orchid branch, Voice, Sea shell, Memories from a distant island, Truong Sa island soldiers .

One of the songs that helped make The Hien's name popular is Ponytail , released in 1995. The musician once said that once, he was riding his bike across Nam Ky Khoi Nghia Street (HCMC), near Marie Curie School, when he accidentally collided with a girl riding her bike in the wrong direction. Both fell over, but luckily no one was injured. He asked, "Why were you going the wrong way?", and she apologized profusely. Seeing her bicycle wheel bent into a figure 8, the musician immediately pulled her across the street and asked someone to fix her bike.

During the conversation with the female student, he observed her youthful, dynamic features with her ponytail and white ao dai. The musician recalled his high school days, the melody of the song suddenly rang in his head: "Hey girl with the ponytail/ Riding a bike on the street, the street is crowded with people...". After nearly 30 years of its release, the song has been performed by many generations of singers, however, the recording with Quang Linh's voice is still the most popular with the audience.

In recent years, the musician has continued to maintain his compositional style, serving as a judge in music competitions, and inspiring the younger generation. In 2023, he released a collection of 32 songs about the armed forces, eight songs about love for the homeland, and sent them to units, officer training schools, and border guards.
