Boldly change direction, success from new model

While busy taking care of the bamboo rats, Mr. Nguyen Van Linh, village 7, Bao Ha commune happily told about the opportunity to come to bamboo rats: "Since the end of 2021, the commune has been propagating about the poverty reduction model, I have gone to learn from the experience and boldly invested in trying to raise bamboo rats. At first, I was worried, but when I understood the characteristics of the animals, I became more confident."

From the initial 10 pairs of bamboo rats, the family has now expanded to 120 pairs, bringing in a stable source of income.

After nearly 4 years of being attached to his new pet, Mr. Linh assessed that bamboo rats are easy to care for, have low investment costs, and most importantly, ensure hygiene in the cage to prevent disease. Bamboo rats are rodents that can reproduce quickly, after about three months each can reach a weight of 3-4 kg, bringing high economic value.

Currently, his family is selling breeding bamboo rats at the price of 1 million VND/pair of small bamboo rats and 2 million VND/pair of large bamboo rats; commercial bamboo rats are sold stably at the price of 550,000 to 600,000 VND/kg.

Through the breeding process, the family has mastered the technique, can self-breed and provide breeds to many households in the village, contributing to expanding the model to neighboring areas.

Mr. Linh plans to continue expanding the breeding scale to about 500 pairs in the near future to increase income.

From a model to a movement of livestock association

From the success of Mr. Linh's family, the movement of raising commercial bamboo rats and breeding bamboo rats in Bao Ha commune has grown more and more. Currently, the whole commune has 5 households in village 7 and Lien Ha village participating in breeding, with a total herd of more than 1,300 bamboo rats.

It is noteworthy that households do not develop individually but have proactively linked together in groups to provide technical support, share care experiences and prevent diseases. When there is a large output, households cooperate to supply the market, contributing to keeping prices stable and creating prestige for local products.

Compared with traditional livestock models, the bamboo rat farming model has many advantages, such as: easy-to-find food sources (sugarcane, bamboo, corn, vegetables, most households have large production land so they can grow food crops to serve livestock); simple care; fast reproductive life cycle; quite stable market...

Therefore, the bamboo rat farming model is considered by many households in Bao Ha commune to be a suitable economic development direction for many families, helping to take advantage of barn area and idle labor.

Orientation of support and replication of the model from local authorities

Identifying bamboo rat farming as a new model with great potential in poverty reduction, the Bao Ha commune government has actively promoted and mobilized people to boldly invest, while providing technical support throughout the implementation process.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of Bao Ha Commune People's Committee said: In the coming time, the locality will continue to promote programs to support people in developing effective livestock farming, associated with the orientation of sustainable poverty reduction. The commune will strengthen the propaganda of new policies and guidelines, especially the content of the draft resolution of the Provincial People's Council on supporting crops and livestock; at the same time, calling on businesses and cooperatives to participate in consumption linkages to help people feel secure in expanding the scale.

Breeding households all have large areas of land to actively grow food for bamboo rats.

In addition, the commune directs the agricultural extension and veterinary teams to accompany households in improving breeds, applying safe farming methods, and supporting households in converting to suitable livestock according to their needs. The evaluation and replication of effective models such as raising bamboo rats will be widely implemented so that many households have materials and opportunities to escape poverty.

The success of households in Bao Ha shows that raising bamboo rats is a feasible model, with low risks, bringing high profits, opening up a new direction in rural economic development, contributing to the goal of sustainable poverty reduction of the commune.
