With the New Year approaching and the Lunar New Year just over a month away, consumer demand is currently high, and some goods are showing signs of price increases.
Although supermarkets and traditional markets still have a fairly abundant supply of goods to meet people's needs, the adverse weather conditions this year have caused difficulties in the supply of food, both domestically and imported. This has significantly impacted market prices.
According to a survey by reporters from the Industry and Trade Newspaper, compared to last month, the price of green vegetables in supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City has increased by 10-20%, and baking ingredients such as flour and cooking oil have also increased by 5-10%. Furthermore, the prices of meats such as pork, chicken, and seafood are also showing a slight upward trend.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, owner of a fruit shop in Ho Chi Minh City, shared: "The prices of some fruits have started to increase, and are expected to rise even more sharply as Tet approaches. Based on my experience, I've noticed that mandarin oranges and green pomelos are the two items with the highest price increases and are also the most popular during Tet, because they can be preserved for a long time and are often chosen as gifts. Currently, the price of green pomelos and mandarin oranges ranges from 50,000 to 55,000 VND/kg, but I predict the price could increase by about 20% closer to Tet."

Ms. Le Thi Thu, the owner of a food store in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City, is also facing many challenges due to continuously receiving price increase notices from suppliers.
"Producers of processed seafood have announced a 5% price increase, pickled pig ears have increased by 11%, and various types of sausages and ham have increased by up to 13%. High-quality rice is also trending upwards in price. Fruit growers have also announced they will adjust prices according to the general market situation as Tet approaches. In addition, transportation costs are also increasing , " Ms. Thu said.
Ms. Tran Thu Ha, a resident of District 10, Ho Chi Minh City, said she recently bought a 5-liter bottle of cooking oil for 200,000 VND, whereas last month it cost only 175,000 VND. Ms. Ha confided: "When shopping at the market, price increases of a few thousand dong often go unnoticed or are hard to remember. But when shopping at the supermarket, with clear receipts and prices listed, I notice the difference and realize that many items have increased in price . "
The main cause of this fluctuation stems from rising input costs, transportation costs, and production costs, all of which directly impact the final price of the product.
In response to this situation, several major supermarket chains in Ho Chi Minh City have decided to adjust prices upwards by at least 3%-5% for most suppliers. The new prices have already been applied to some items, while others are expected to be adjusted in the next shipment.
From the suppliers' perspective, they explained that they had done their best to stabilize prices and maintain a stable price level for consumers. However, due to the sharp fluctuations in raw material prices, especially international shipping costs and operating expenses that exceeded their capacity to cope, adjusting selling prices was an unavoidable measure. They were forced to adjust selling prices to partially offset the significantly increased input costs.

Currently, many businesses, supermarkets, and retail systems have launched Tet gift boxes onto the market. A notable trend this year is the focus on health care and environmentally friendly products in these gift boxes. The main products in these boxes are often agricultural products and essential consumer goods, meeting the practical needs of consumers.
According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van, Director of Communications at Central Retail Vietnam (the company that owns GO!, Big C, Tops Market supermarkets, etc.), consumer purchasing power has shown signs of increasing in recent days. The items most sought after and purchased by consumers are those catering to year-end needs, including beer, wine, soft drinks, cold cuts, fruits, and Christmas decorations. This indicates a surge in demand for end-of-year holiday shopping.
Specifically, for the upcoming Lunar New Year of the Snake 2025, representatives from Central Retail anticipate that the volume of goods supplied to the market will increase by approximately 10% compared to the same period last year.
To support the people during the Lunar New Year holiday, ensuring a prosperous and stable period with stable prices, relevant authorities have been implementing many coordinated measures. Recently, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued a directive on implementing solutions to ensure a balance between supply and demand and stabilize the market during the end of 2024 and the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Snake 2025.
Along with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Finance has also provided close guidance. The Ministry of Finance requires its affiliated agencies and units, the Departments of Finance in provinces and cities, and other relevant agencies to coordinate closely and implement synchronized measures to maintain market price stability. The main objective is to prevent price fluctuations that could negatively impact socio-economic life, especially during the 2025 Lunar New Year, a time when consumer demand is high.
