(CLO) The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Norway, and Switzerland jointly expressed concern on November 27th about the escalating violence in Mozambique, a southern African nation currently embroiled in weeks of post-election protests.
"We call on the Government of Mozambique to maintain the role of its security forces in protecting the people of Mozambique," the countries said in a joint statement.

Public outrage has been mounting following last month's controversial election results, sparking protests from opposition supporters.
The opposition is protesting the election results, claiming that Frelimo's victory was rigged. Frelimo has been the ruling party in Mozambique since 1975.
According to the election results, the Frelimo party will remain in power with candidate Daniel Chapo succeeding President Filipe Nyusi to become the fifth president of Mozambique since the country gained independence from Portugal.
A video shared on social media on November 27 showed an armored vehicle plowing into a crowd of protesters in the capital Maputo and hitting a woman.
In response to the incident, the Mozambican army issued a statement expressing deep regret over the accident, stating that the vehicle in the convoy "accidentally struck a civilian."
Last week, the local monitoring group Platforma Decide reported that at least 67 people had died as a result of the unrest between mid-October and mid-November.
