Zhang Shenxinran, a third-year student at Tsinghua University – one of China's most prestigious universities – rose to fame in 2022 after achieving the highest score in the national college entrance examination (gaokao) in her hometown of Fujian Province. She was the first person in her village to be admitted to Tsinghua and received a scholarship of 105,000 yuan (approximately 380 million VND). However, Zhang decided to donate the entire amount to underprivileged students. This action attracted significant media and public attention.

At the time, some suspected her of "self-promotion" and suggested that her donations were paving the way for a future personal media career. To prove her initial intentions were pure, Zhang Shenxinran proactively stayed away from social media for the first two years of university, and only recently reappeared. She frankly shared, "I hope to appear with a completely new identity."

Schoolgirl "too pretty to livestream": Is this a father's protective stance or prejudice?
Not only is Zhang academically gifted, but she also impresses with her beautiful appearance. Many people have commented that she resembles the famous actress Chen Duling. Currently, she shares her study experiences, exercise routines, and even live chat sessions on social media platforms.

During a broadcast, when asked by a younger student about her secret to preparing for the college entrance exam, Zhang gently advised: “Don’t stress too much. You won’t be able to do all the practice tests, so allocate specific time for each subject and stick to your plan.” She said she studied for about 8 hours a day, read 500 pages of books each week, and exercised 5-6 times a week.

“There are many types of excellent students. I am someone who loves both studying and beauty. I think those two things are not contradictory,” Zhang said. She also shared her aspiration to become a university or high school teacher in the future.

However, Zhang's father, Zhang Jiatian, a blogger specializing in family education , disagreed with his daughter's livestreaming. He frankly told the media: "I have forbidden her from live streaming. My daughter's videos attract tens of thousands of views and even advertising offers. But I don't support it because livestreaming is not appropriate for such beautiful girls."

"As a university student, you can start a business, but you need the right direction; you can't just do it haphazardly," he emphasized.

Advanced degrees – a motivator or a barrier to diverse career choices?

According to SCMP , the father's stance immediately sparked heated debate on Chinese social media. Many agreed, arguing that he was protecting his daughter and that his family didn't need to rely on income from livestreaming. Meanwhile, many others expressed regret that a talented and beautiful girl like Zhang was being limited in her opportunities to express herself.

"A girl who is perfect in every way deserves to shine," one user commented.

Another netizen commented, "Shouldn't Tsinghua University students focus on academics? Livestreaming is a waste of educational resources." They argued that students from top universities should excel in scientific research, academics, or high-tech industries, rather than pursuing "online celebrity business."

However, some argue that career choices shouldn't be "constrained" by academic qualifications. Zhang Shenxinran herself shared that her ideal future career is to become a university lecturer, but if circumstances don't allow it, being a high school teacher is also a good option. She enjoys thinking, answering questions, and livestreaming or making short videos can help her explore her career path.

Furthermore, by sharing her learning experiences, this female student is also spreading a positive attitude towards life. A high degree should not be a limitation, but rather a boost to self-confidence, opening up more choices in life.

According to Inf News , societal expectations of "Tsinghua University students" may stem from ingrained perceptions of the elite, but true elites are those who dare to break the mold and live authentically. Life has no absolute right answers. We may disagree with a particular choice, but we shouldn't rush to judge others as "wasting their degree" or "not decent enough."

In today's diverse world, respecting each individual's career choices and lifestyles is truly a step forward for society.
