Floodwaters rise, An Giang mobilizes militia to build dams and reinforce dikes to protect rice fields

Faced with rising flood waters, the authorities of Co To and Vinh Gia communes (An Giang) mobilized militia and self-defense forces to urgently build dams and reinforce dikes to protect rice fields.

On October 25, Mr. Nguyen Van Van, Chairman of the People's Committee of Co To commune, An Giang province, said that in the face of rising floodwaters, in recent days the commune has mobilized many officers and soldiers of military forces and militia to urgently build dams and reinforce key dikes.

Currently, the whole commune has 7,971 hectares of 2025 autumn-winter crop area. The harvested rice outside the dike is 984/1279 hectares, yield 5.2 tons/ha, selling price 4,000 VND/kg to 5,800 VND/kg. Rice in the 3-crop sub-regions is mainly in the tillering stage, to the flowering stage, developing well, the disease situation is stable.

"Rice in the three-crop sub-regions is mainly in the tillering and panicle-forming stages, growing well, and the disease situation is stable. Currently, the flood water level is higher than the same period last year, so the water level inside and outside the dike is nearly 1 meter different. We have deployed forces to continuously patrol and protect the dike to promptly reinforce weak sections of the dike," said Mr. Van.

Mr. Nguyen Hoang Vinh, Chairman of Vinh Gia Commune People's Committee, An Giang Province, said that the locality had 16 hectares of rice outside the dike of a household submerged by floodwaters, with estimated damage of over 160 million VND. In addition, 9 hectares of crops that had not yet been harvested were also submerged by the flood.

"All areas within the dike are safe. The 16-hectare rice field outside the dike was submerged after only a month of planting. Before this household planted rice, the local authorities had clearly mobilized and invited them to work, but this household still deliberately planted rice," said Mr. Vinh.

Regarding this, Mr. Tran Thanh Hiep, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of An Giang province, said that many localities in the province planted rice outside the dyke, so they were attacked by floodwaters, causing heavy damage. Specifically, the areas of Ba Chuc, Vinh Gia, Co To... Localities are urgently reinforcing the dyke to help people.

"People spontaneously growing rice outside the dike was not in the plan, but the damage was insignificant. According to the forecast of the functional sector, from now until the 15th day of the 9th lunar month is the high tide period, the water will gradually recede. When the government finishes reinforcing the dike, people will feel more secure," said Mr. Hiep.
