| Mr. Srettha Thavisin |
On August 22, the Thai Parliament convened a joint session of the House of Representatives and the Senate to elect a new prime minister. This was the third attempt by the Thai Parliament to elect a new prime minister since the general election more than three months ago. With 482 votes in favor, 165 against, and 81 abstentions, Srettha Thavisin (Pheu Thai Party) was elected as Thailand's 30th Prime Minister. The newly elected Prime Minister is awaiting royal confirmation.
Srettha Thavisin, 60, was formerly the owner of a real estate conglomerate. He is not a member of parliament, but he is one of three prime ministerial candidates that the Pheu Thai party registered with the Thai Election Commission ahead of the general election on May 14th. According to the Thai Constitution, a prime ministerial candidate does not necessarily have to be a member of parliament.
In other developments, former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was sentenced on the same day by the Supreme Court of Thailand to eight years in prison for abuse of power and misconduct; illegally ordering a state-owned bank to issue foreign loans; and illegally holding shares through an designated party. Thaksin will be closely monitored during his imprisonment due to his current health condition, including problems with blood pressure, lungs, heart, and spine.
