Define:

Parentification is the disruption of intergenerational boundaries, where the roles of family members are reversed. Specifically, the child may assume the role of a parent, caring for and meeting the life and emotional needs of their siblings, and sometimes even fulfilling the needs of their own parents.

Parentification is divided into two types as follows:

Instrumental parentification: Children are assigned responsibilities related to physical labor such as housework, cooking, cleaning, and caring for family members. This is common in families where one or both parents are unable to work due to injury, illness, or the death of a parent.
Motional parentification: The child becomes an advisor, emotional caregiver, and emotional support system for family members. This is common in families where a parent suffers from mental illness, such as depression.

The process of parentalization occurs on a fairly wide scale and with varying degrees of harm. Children who are "forced" into parental care may grow up to be better caregivers, but it can also be a psychological disaster, forcing the child to balance responsibilities with their own rights.
