A young man who choked on a chicken bone, causing a perforation in his small intestine, has just undergone emergency surgery.
According to news from Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital on January 23rd, doctors at the hospital recently performed emergency surgery on a young man who had a chicken bone lodged in his throat, causing a perforation of his small intestine.
Earlier, while eating, Mr. LPT (30 years old, residing in Soc Trang ) unfortunately choked on a chicken bone. He bought medicine and took it for 3 days, but the pain did not subside. Afterwards, his family took him to Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital for emergency treatment in a state of exhaustion, fever, abdominal distension, diarrhea, and severe pain above the navel, which worsened over time.
The chicken bone fragment was surgically removed.
Following examination and paraclinical tests, the abdominal MSCT results revealed a radiopaque foreign body measuring 4 x 12 mm, penetrating the wall of the ileal loop in the right iliac fossa. The ileal loop wall was thickened, edematous, and surrounded by fatty infiltration. The ileum occupied approximately half the lower length of the small intestine.
After consultation, the patient was scheduled for emergency surgery to remove a segment of the small intestine containing a chicken bone. Following the surgery, the patient recovered quickly, experienced significant pain relief, and resumed normal eating habits.
Dr. Nguyen Huu Ky Phuong, Deputy Head of the Gastroenterology Department at Hoan My Cuu Long General Hospital, advises that if people suspect they have swallowed a bone, they should go to a medical facility for examination. When experiencing any unusual symptoms, even a mild but persistent stomach ache, they should seek medical attention promptly. Absolutely do not try to swallow more food or water, or use folk remedies, as this will damage the digestive tract lining and worsen the condition.
