According to him, at around 1:30 p.m. on November 24, two guests came to eat at his family's restaurant on Hang Than Street, Lam Son Ward. The bill was 270,000 VND, but the guest scanned the QR code and mistakenly transferred 270 million VND.
Mr. Hiep said that when the customer scanned the QR code, he did not check the account balance. It was not until late afternoon that he discovered that the balance had an unusually large amount. At this time, the customer had left many hours ago. According to the store's camera, the person who transferred the money by mistake was a woman in her 40s, accompanied by a friend.
Mr. Hiep's family then posted the information on their personal page and social networking sites with the hope of returning the money to the customer. In fact, many people claimed that the money was theirs but could not prove ownership, and the camera images showed that it was not true, so the family did not return it.
Mr. Hoang Hiep also went to the bank to ask for customer information. However, due to security factors and not being in the same system, the bank could not support the search.
"It's not my money so of course I have to return it," said Mr. Hiep, adding that there were times when customers came to eat and mistakenly transferred 300-400 million VND.
Due to concerns about her account being hacked, Mr. Hiep's mother went to the bank this morning to withdraw cash to keep it safe to avoid loss, waiting to return it to the customer under the witness of the authorities.
Current regulations do not allow banks to disclose the recipient's personal information to the sender and are also not allowed to interfere with the recipient's account or arbitrarily refund the mistakenly transferred amount without the consent of the recipient account owner.
