We should care for and look after the elderly so that they can always live happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
Comprehensive care
Over the years, the province has implemented a comprehensive range of healthcare activities for the elderly, from disease prevention and regular health check-ups to treatment and rehabilitation. The grassroots healthcare network, especially commune and ward health stations, has become a reliable "support system," helping the elderly feel more secure in their healthcare and health protection.
According to Deputy Director of the Department of Health Nguyen Hoang Uyen: “Caring for the health of the elderly is one of the major priorities of the health sector. We not only maintain medical examinations, treatment, and health record management for the elderly, but also focus on organizing regular check-ups, providing free medicine, and guiding the prevention of common chronic diseases in old age. Most importantly, each elderly person feels cared for, has convenient and timely access to healthcare services, and receives humane treatment. Beyond care, the elderly are also a source of spiritual support and a shining example for their families and communities. The health sector hopes to accompany them so they can live happily and healthily, continue to share their experiences and wisdom, contribute to the education of the younger generation, and build a cultural life in the locality.”
Thanks to this attention, every year, hundreds of thousands of elderly people in the province receive regular health check-ups. This helps them detect cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other health problems early.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan (residing in Thu Thua commune) shared: “Previously, I was often careless and rarely went for check-ups. Since the local authorities organized regular health check-ups for the elderly, I have regularly had my blood pressure, cardiovascular health, and blood sugar checked. Thanks to this, my high blood pressure has been detected and is well controlled. I feel reassured and appreciate the attention that the government and the health sector have given to the elderly.”
The attention and support from all levels and sectors is a great source of encouragement for the elderly.
Alongside medical care, the province also focuses on cultural and artistic activities, as well as physical exercise for the elderly. Arts and culture clubs and physical exercise clubs have flourished in many communes and wards, becoming beneficial "playgrounds" that provide opportunities for the elderly to socialize, improve their health, and maintain an optimistic spirit.
In My Le commune, activities to care for the elderly are linked to building a cultural life for the community. According to Nguyen Phuc Truong, Vice Chairman of the My Le Commune People's Committee: “Caring for the elderly is not only a policy but also a responsibility and an expression of gratitude from the entire community. Over the past time, the commune has maintained arts and culture clubs and health clubs, creating opportunities for the elderly to participate regularly. In addition, the commune also organizes thematic talks on health, training sessions on disease prevention and control, helping the elderly gain more knowledge to take care of themselves.”
Helping the elderly live happy, healthy, and productive lives.
Not only the health sector and government at all levels, but also provincial social work centers and provincial social protection centers are actively working to care for the elderly. Accordingly, many activities to support and care for elderly people living alone have been implemented.
Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc Huyen, a caregiver at the Provincial Social Work Center, shared: “We regularly visit, encourage, organize activities, and chat with the elderly to help them feel less lonely. For some, just a word of inquiry or a conversation is enough to warm their hearts. For those with weak health, we coordinate with medical staff to monitor and care for them attentively.” It is clear that the care and attention given to the elderly goes beyond medical services; it also includes companionship and sharing in their emotional well-being, helping them find more faith and joy in life.
One of the key factors for older adults to have a happy life is the support of their families and communities. On International Day of Older Persons, October 1st, various levels of government and localities in the province organized many delegations to visit and give gifts to older adults.
Expressing his joy at being visited and receiving gifts from provincial leaders, Mr. Tran Xien (from the Provincial Social Protection Center) said: “I am deeply moved by the concern shown by the provincial leaders and various departments and organizations. This is a great source of encouragement that helps us elderly people feel cared for, not left behind, and to continue striving to improve our lives.”
The province is implementing a comprehensive set of activities to provide healthcare for the elderly.
In Tay Ninh , the "Elderly - Shining Examples" emulation movement has long been a highlight. With a sense of responsibility and life experience, the elderly have become a core force in mobilizing people to comply with the policies and guidelines of the Party and State; actively participating in patriotic emulation movements, especially those aimed at preserving traditional customs and building a cultural life in residential areas. They are a vivid example of the spirit of "living happily, living healthily, and living usefully."
Ms. Le Thi Tho (residing in My Le commune) said: “We elderly people must first and foremost set an example for our children and grandchildren, from maintaining a proper lifestyle and obeying the law to working diligently and caring for the community. I always remind my children and grandchildren that studying to become successful is important, but living with compassion and responsibility towards family and society is even more important.”
Elderly people are a valuable asset to families and society, preserving the memories, traditions, and positive values of the nation. Therefore, caring for the elderly not only reflects social welfare policies but also symbolizes humanity, gratitude, and the continuation of moral values.
International Day of Older Persons (October 1st) 2025, with the message "For a healthy community, let's work together to care for the health of older people," serves as a reminder for everyone to be aware of their responsibility in caring for older people so that they can live happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
On December 14, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly voted to designate October 1st as the International Day of Older Persons. The first International Day of Older Persons was celebrated on October 1, 1991. International Day of Older Persons is celebrated to raise awareness of issues affecting older persons, such as the aging process and the abuse of older persons; it is also a day to recognize the contributions older persons make to society.
