Rangnick was right about Garnacho

Coach Ralf Rangnick once emphasized that a young midfielder like Alejandro Garnacho needs to "keep his feet on the ground" if he wants to have a successful career at MU.

Garnacho, the young talent who was given his first-team debut by Rangnick at Manchester United, left Old Trafford to join Chelsea for £40 million in the summer transfer window. The 21-year-old midfielder was expected to shine at MU, but was dropped from Ruben Amorim's squad due to irreconcilable differences.

Before becoming a key player in the first team, Garnacho made an impressive debut in the 2021/22 season, coming on as a substitute in a match against Chelsea. At that time, Rangnick was the interim manager at MU and recognized Garnacho's potential very early on.

In a press conference before his debut, Rangnick said of Garnacho: “He’s been training with the first team for the last two weeks and I know that Garnacho is one of the most promising players. He’s only 17 years old, but if he stays humble and strives to improve himself every day, Garnacho doesn’t need to sit on the bench; he’s perfectly capable of playing for this club.”

As Rangnick predicted, Garnacho truly shone and made 144 appearances for MU. However, Rangnick also emphasized that Garnacho needs to "keep his feet on the ground" if he wants to go far in his career.

This could be one of the biggest problems in Garnacho's career at MU. It seems the midfielder received too much attention too soon and started showing signs of complacency.

For example, Garnacho's reaction after the 2024/25 Europa League final against Tottenham is a clear example of a lack of self-control. After being left out of the squad for the final, Garnacho showed his displeasure and clashed with manager Amorim.

He was again left out of the summer tour squad and allowed to leave. Garnacho further angered Manchester United fans by wearing Marcus Rashford's shirt at Aston Villa, at a time when Rashford's relationship with MU was also strained.

Before joining Chelsea, Garnacho put a lot of pressure on Manchester United to find a new club. The midfielder was adamant about playing at Stamford Bridge, forcing the "Red Devils" to take a backseat in negotiations with Chelsea.

MU wins hard at home. Late on August 30th, Manchester United secured their first Premier League victory by defeating Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford.
