At this time of year, in addition to farmers being busy weeding the sugarcane and cassava plants, the harvest season for bitter herbs is also beginning.

Bitter ground herb grows wild, interspersed in sugarcane and cassava fields. Or after the harvest, when the rice paddy soil is dry and cracked by the sun, but when the weather turns cool, that's when bitter ground herb sprouts abundantly.

When the land cracks and the weather turns cool, many locals take advantage of the opportunity to harvest this type of wild vegetable, which is also considered a clean vegetable, to earn extra income.

In the fields of Binh Luong hamlet, Dong Khoi commune, Chau Thanh district (Tay Ninh province), Ms. Tran Thi Kim Loan and her daughter are engrossed in picking bitter herbs growing among the harvested rice plants.

Ms. Loan said that from November onwards, when the weather turns chilly, bitter herbs start to grow. At this time, many people begin searching for this wild herb growing in the fields and rice paddies to harvest it.

Currently, bitter melon is one of the most popular wild vegetables, so its selling price is quite high, ranging from 40,000 to 50,000 VND per kilogram.

Ms. Loan happily said that on weekends, her daughter helps her pick, so together, the two of them pick nearly 10 kg of bitter greens. Selling these delicious and nutritious wild vegetables, they earn about 500,000 VND per day.

According to Ms. Loan, there were days when, even before the bitter greens were washed to remove the dirt and sand, people would come directly to the field to buy them.

Bitter melon is a wild, natural vegetable that is very suitable for cooking soup with many types of freshwater fish, or in snakehead fish porridge; eating it with bitter melon is very delicious and nutritious.

As the name suggests, bitter herbs are difficult to eat for those unfamiliar with them, but once you've tried them, you'll keep seeking them out and eating them.
