On December 5, the People's Committee of An Thang Ward ( Da Nang City) handed over a rare turtle to the Inter-commune Forest Protection Department of Region 3.
The turtle weighed nearly 1kg, was in stable health, and showed no signs of injury. Mr. Do Nhu Hien (resident of An Thang ward) discovered the turtle crawling into his garden. Suspecting that this was a rare species, Mr. Hien submitted it to the People's Committee of An Thang ward.
The ward People's Committee has completed the procedures to hand over the turtle to the Inter-commune Forest Protection Department of Region 3 for care, health monitoring and release into the natural environment. It was identified as a Central Vietnamese yellow-fronted box turtle ( Cuora bourreti ).
This is an endangered, rare wild animal, group IB, that needs priority protection in Vietnam.
This species is listed in the Red Book of Vietnam and the world , at high risk of extinction due to illegal hunting and habitat loss.
