Open-loop and green transport

Currently, there are two main trends in public transportation fare collection worldwide: closed-loop systems and open-loop systems. Closed-loop systems have been implemented in Vietnam for a long time, such as purchasing tickets with cash or using designated transport cards for buses, electric bicycles, metro, etc.

Since Covid-19, countries around the world have gradually shifted to open-loop fare collection technology for transportation, most recently Thailand with its subway system in Bangkok. This automated fare payment system eliminates the need for cash or multiple traditional paper tickets. Passengers can use existing payment methods such as credit cards, debit cards, prepaid cards, or convenient Apple Pay and Samsung Pay with just one tap, or e-wallets to scan QR codes and pay for their journey.

This method can replace manual payment and ticketing systems, contributing to a transportation network where all transactions operate seamlessly, quickly, and securely, providing a modern payment experience for passengers, promoting green travel and sustainable environmental protection, and is particularly suitable for young people using smartphones.

Sacombank is a pioneer in providing technical infrastructure for green transportation payments.

With these benefits, Sacombank has pioneered cooperation with HURC1 and Mastercard to implement an automated ticket payment system using Open-loop technology on Metro Line 1 Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien, allowing customers to make cashless payments using their cards from all banks and card organizations such as Mastercard, Visa, JCB, UnionPay, American Express, Napas, etc.

At the same time, Sacombank is also actively collaborating with the Ho Chi Minh City Public Transport Management Center to implement an open-loop payment solution for bus, river bus, and electric buggy systems, expected to launch in early 2025, providing customers with a seamless experience across all types of public transport in the city.

"HURC1 has actively collaborated with Mastercard, Sacombank, and other partners to successfully implement an automated ticket payment system, bringing convenience, speed, and safety to passengers using public transportation in Ho Chi Minh City. With an estimated 40,000 passengers per day in the initial phase of metro operation, optimizing ticket purchasing and payment processes and procedures is crucial," a HURC1 representative stated.

Mastercard's Asia Pacific representative also emphasized that the Open-loop electronic payment system is a breakthrough in enhancing the booking and payment experience for people using public transportation.

"Mastercard and its partners aim to provide users with a sense of security, satisfaction, and a seamless experience. We believe that this automated ticket payment system will become a model for other transportation projects in Vietnam and the region," a Mastercard representative shared.

“This collaboration not only brings practical benefits to the people of Ho Chi Minh City but also creates a significant turning point in the development of high-tech solutions, elevating public transport infrastructure in Vietnam to regional and international standards. With the readiness of the technical infrastructure, Sacombank is working with localities and partners to implement modern payment solutions, contributing to the formation of a sustainable, comprehensive, and environmentally friendly urban public transport ecosystem, improving the quality of life for people and aiming towards environmental protection,” a Sacombank representative shared.

For its positive contributions in providing payment solutions for public transport projects, Sacombank was recently honored as Technical Enabler of the Year (2024) at Mastercard's annual customer conference in Hanoi.
