Weak purchasing power

Based on our observations, in recent days, goods in the Quang Nam market have been abundant in variety and design. Essential items such as food, beverages, fruits, seafood, cooking oil, etc., are plentiful in supermarkets, traditional markets, mini-supermarkets, and convenience stores. However, consumer purchasing power remains weak.

Speaking to us at the Go Tam Ky supermarket on the morning of February 4th, Ms. Trinh Thi Minh Ai (Tan Thanh ward, Tam Ky) said: “We still have goods left that we bought before Tet. Occasionally, we buy more drinks and bread to use right away.”

Tam Ky market is still quiet these days. Many vendors haven't opened their shops yet, especially those selling clothes, fashion items , and cosmetics. The stalls selling beef and pork at Tam Ky market opened on the second day of Tet (Lunar New Year), but there are few customers.

Ms. Quynh Trang, a pork vendor at Tam Ky market, said: "People stock up on pork and beef before Tet (Lunar New Year). We sell fresh meat to serve consumers who want to use fresh food products."

Most traditional markets in the province are quiet these days. The increasingly prominent trend of online shopping is the reason for the gradual decline in market demand. A small trader at Hoi An market said: "Before Tet, goods were already selling slower than at the same time last year. After Tet, I'm even more worried about unsold goods."

Maintaining market stability

According to Ms. Do Thi Hien, Head of the Trade Management Department (Department of Industry and Trade), from the second day of Tet (Lunar New Year), some distribution businesses and individual business households have started reopening for business with a fairly abundant supply, meeting the shopping needs of the people well.

Due to low consumer purchasing power in the province, prices of goods have decreased compared to the days leading up to Tet. The market is relatively stable, with no imbalances in supply and demand causing unusual price increases.

According to Mr. Le Vu Thuong, Director of the Department of Industry and Trade, thanks to the successful implementation of the "Vietnamese people prioritize using Vietnamese goods" campaign, Vietnamese goods have gained dominance in the market, especially food, clothing, and beverages, which are trusted by consumers.

However, prices of many essential goods on the market are still fluctuating. The economy is still facing many difficulties and recovering slowly due to the impact of natural disasters and epidemics, which negatively affects production, business, and consumption, especially as people tighten their spending, and purchasing power before, during, and after Tet is not as strong as expected.

Through inspections, it was found that food processing and trading establishments in the districts of the province are still small-scale, violating regulations on food safety and hygiene knowledge certification, improper food preservation, and unclear price listing of goods. The Department will continue to inspect and handle these issues to bring production and trading of goods into order.

According to Mr. Luong Viet Tinh, Director of the Quang Nam Market Management Department, before, during, and after Tet (Lunar New Year), the authorities closely coordinated with relevant departments, agencies, and localities to inspect and monitor goods to prevent smuggling, counterfeit goods, and imitation goods. The forces promptly detected, prevented, and strictly handled acts of speculation, hoarding, and fraudulent practices in measurement and packaging aimed at illicit profit.

"We continue to fight against the trafficking and transportation of prohibited goods and smuggled items, as well as the production and sale of counterfeit, substandard, and illegally sourced goods, in order to stabilize the market and protect consumers," Mr. Tinh said.

According to the Department of Industry and Trade, in recent times, businesses participating in market stabilization, along with suppliers and distribution systems, have implemented many promotional programs, focusing on Tet holiday goods such as soft drinks, cakes, candies, jams, shoes, and clothing. Bringing Tet goods to consumers has always been a priority for relevant authorities and businesses; Tet holiday sales points and markets, combined with programs to bring Vietnamese goods to rural areas, remote regions, islands, and border communes, help people access and purchase essential goods.
