Indifference exposed in New York subway burning

(CLO) An innocent woman was standing on a train when she was burned alive in a horrific attack. However, there was no reaction from the people around: no one helped, instead, they just focused on filming. The police passed by the burning woman but did not take any action to help.

On December 22, a heartbreaking incident occurred on the F train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station in New York, USA. The incident not only reflected the brutality of the criminal Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala who brutally burned an innocent woman alive, but also strongly criticized the New York society and community.

In a video of the horrific scene posted online, scores of people at the scene can be seen simply standing there watching or holding up their phones to film, as if they were watching a performance instead of a real tragedy.

The suspect, identified as Sebastian Zapeta, a 33-year-old man who police said was living at a homeless shelter in Brooklyn, was charged with three counts in a criminal complaint filed in Brooklyn criminal court: first-degree murder, second-degree murder and first-degree arson.

Although the suspect has been arrested and prosecuted, public anger has not yet subsided at the indifference of those around, including the police. The woman died from the fire, while around her, witnesses just stood still and filmed.

This incident not only reflects the degradation of society, but also exposes deep problems in government and law enforcement in New York.

As people spend more time on their phones and social media, alienation and indifference grow. Instead of helping those in need, they enjoy sharing other people’s painful moments.

Zapeta-Calil's story is just one of countless incidents of violence that have become part of everyday life in New York. In 2022, a homeless man with mental illness and multiple arrests pushed a woman named Michelle Go into a train at Times Square Station, killing her.
