Responding to Thanh Nien Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Thai Vinh Nguyen, Head of the Education and Training Department of Thu Duc City, said that today, January 17th, an inter-agency inspection team visited Nguyen Hien Primary School - where dozens of students were absent from school, including 24 students absent due to stomach aches and fever. The inspection team included representatives from the HCDC, Thu Duc City Police, the Health Department, the Education and Training Department, the Thu Duc City Health Center, and the Thu Duc City Market Management Department.
According to Mr. Nguyen, the inspection team checked the records and food preparation procedures at the school's kitchen and canteen, and assessed the situation of the students. The inspection revealed that the facility maintained hygiene standards, staff performing food preparation wore protective equipment, and the three-step logbook was updated and samples were stored as required.
"As of 9:30 AM on January 17th, 10 out of the 24 students who had fever and stomachaches had returned to school. The remaining 14 students' health has stabilized, but their parents have not yet sent them to school (because they want their children to recover). Currently, the school has not received any information from other cases," Mr. Nguyen said.
The Department of Education and Training of Thu Duc City also issued a quick report regarding the incident where many students were absent from school due to stomach aches. Specifically, on January 16th, 70 students were absent from school for various reasons. Of these, 24 students were absent due to fever, stomach aches, diarrhea, etc.
Currently, the children's health is stable, and none have required hospitalization. Normally, Nguyen Hien Primary School has a number of absent students each day, ranging from about 40-60 students per day, scattered across all 35 classrooms of the school.
Earlier, on the afternoon of January 16th, upon receiving information from parents that many students were absent from school due to stomach aches and fever, an inspection team arrived at the school. The team included representatives from the Department of Education and Training, the Department of Health , the Medical Center, the Thu Duc City Police, and the An Phu Ward People's Committee. Speaking with a reporter from Thanh Nien Newspaper, a professional staff member in Thu Duc City stated that this was not food poisoning related to the school lunch on January 15th. The staff member explained: "Over 1,400 students ate the school lunch, but only 24 were absent on the morning of January 16th due to stomach aches and fever… These students were scattered across different classes, not concentrated in any one class. Some students experienced fever and stomach aches… but they were not among those who had lunch at school on January 15th. The remaining students also ate the school lunch but were in perfectly normal health."
School lunch programs need to build trust.
Following the incident where 24 students at Nguyen Hien Primary School were absent from school due to stomach aches and fever, the Head of the Education and Training Department of Thu Duc City instructed school principals to strengthen inspections and supervision of school kitchens and food processing facilities that use delivered meals, in order to ensure food safety and the quality of school meals for students.
"Schools must create conditions for parents to participate in inspection and supervision to improve service quality and build trust among parents. Principals must promptly resolve any arising issues, prioritizing the best interests of students above all else, and absolutely preventing any negative reactions or public opinion among parents," Mr. Nguyen Thai Vinh Nguyen emphasized.
At the same time, the Thu Duc City Department of Education and Training requested that school principals coordinate with local authorities in disseminating information to prevent street vendors from selling goods in front of school gates. They also requested continued coordination with local authorities and the health sector to report further developments to the Thu Duc City People's Committee and the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, and to cooperate with Thu Duc City security forces in ensuring order at the schools…
