In the men's team event, the Vietnamese tennis team faced Indonesia in the quarterfinals. Van Phuong was the first player to compete for Vietnam in this event.
In this first singles match, Van Phuong lost the first set but managed to equalize 1-1, forcing the match into a deciding set.
At the crucial moment when Van Phuong broke his opponent's serve to take the lead 4-3 and was 30-0 up on his own service game, he unexpectedly suffered an injury. After more than 4 minutes, the Vietnamese player was still unable to get up despite the medical team's assistance and was disqualified despite having a point advantage.

Ultimately, Van Phuong lost 1-2 (4-6, 7-6, 4-5), leaving Indonesia 1-0 ahead in the race against Vietnam. With this injury, Van Phuong's participation in the men's singles event on December 13th is uncertain.
The Vietnamese team still has hope in the men's team event, as they have one more event to turn the tide in, the men's singles and men's doubles.
Earlier, in the women's team event, the Vietnamese women's team lost 1-2 to the Philippines. The only point came from a victory by female player Savanna Ly Nguyen.
