Thai Xuyen 111 - superior rice variety of Spring crop

Resistant to harsh climates and high productivity

Thai Xuyen 111 is a 3-line hybrid rice variety, developed from the cooperation between ThaiBinh Seed Group and Sichuan Agricultural University. In terms of growth characteristics, Thai Xuyen 111 is a temperate variety, suitable for the climate of the North and North Central regions.

The growing period in the winter-spring crop is about 130 - 135 days, in the summer-autumn crop (seasonal crop) is about 105 - 110 days. The plant is 105 - 118cm tall, with strong tillering, straight leaves, medium leaf blade, green and durable, and has good tolerance to intensive cultivation. In terms of flowers, the variety stands out with large flowers, many seeds, and long seeds. The weight of 1,000 seeds is about 27-28 grams, showing high yield potential.

One of the strongest points of Thai Xuyen 111 is its impressive yield. According to ThaiBinh Seed, the average yield is 57-72 quintals/ha, but with good intensive care, the yield can reach 80-90 quintals/ha. Not only stopping at yield, the quality of the rice of this variety is also very popular with growers and consumers. The milling rate is high, reaching about 72%, the rice is clear, soft, and has a delicious flavor. The amylose content (an index affecting the stickiness and softness of the rice) is recorded at about 16.05%.

Regarding pest resistance, in controlled trials, Thai Xuyen 111 variety showed good response to blast disease (disease level 7), bacterial leaf blight (disease level 5) and brown planthopper (harm level 5). This helps farmers feel more secure when cultivating, reducing pesticide costs and crop failure risks.

The North has a cool climate, cold winters and humid summers, very suitable for temperate varieties like Thai Xuyen 111. ThaiBinh Seed's variety testing in provinces like Thai Binh , Hung Yen, or the Northern Delta and many demonstration models, including Thai Xuyen 111, shows high scores in productivity and good lodging resistance and tillering.

In addition, ThaiBinh Seed's distribution system in the North is very wide, helping farmers access the variety easily. This is a variety that has been cultivated for a long time, so the results have been proven. If intensive farming techniques are applied, fertilization is reasonable, and planting density is maintained at a standard level, farmers often achieve higher yields than traditional mass rice varieties. Large flowers, many grains, few empty rice, soft, fragrant rice, very well accepted by the local market.

In the Central region, especially the North Central region such as Nghe An, Ha Tinh provinces..., Thai Xuyen 111 variety is also welcomed and widely cultivated by farmers. In Ha Tinh, Thai Xuyen 111 has been widely planted on an area of over 4,000 hectares, concentrated in areas such as Duc Tho district. This hybrid variety not only adapts well but also has the potential to expand the production area. According to evaluations at demonstration models, Thai Xuyen 111 yields about 60-65 quintals/ha in Ha Tinh, along with stability and good disease resistance. With the Central region's climate affected by high temperatures, intense sunlight, and good growth ability in the summer-autumn crop (seasonal crop), Thai Xuyen 111 helps maintain its potential yield and rice quality.

Actual results in Nghe An

In the 2025 summer-autumn crop, ThaiBinh Seed supplied more than 200 tons of rice varieties including TBR97 and dozens of tons of Thai Xuyen 111 rice in Thanh Chuong, Do Luong, Dien Chau, Quy Hop, and Quynh Luu (old) districts of Nghe An.

Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc - Director of Tan Ngoc Agricultural Service Cooperative, Quynh Son commune said: Thai Xuyen 111 variety was chosen because it is suitable for semi-mountainous terrain, has stable yield, and the rice stays sticky for a long time, unlike other varieties that are sticky at the beginning of the season and then become sticky later. After rice production, the group buys fresh rice at the price of 6,500 VND/kg at the field, which means 1 sao has 500 kg, reaching 3.3 million/sao, this income is quite good compared to other rice varieties.

Mr. Tran Van Phuong, a farmer in Hamlet 8, Quynh Son Commune, shared: "In the spring crop of 2025, my family planted 4 sao of Thai Xuyen 111 variety. The rice has large, taller grains than other varieties. The yield is about 3.6 to 3.7 quintals/sao".

In the spring crop of 2026, Ms. Ho Thuong - an agricultural specialist in charge of Quynh Son commune said: Quynh Son plans to produce 1,000 hectares of Thai Xuyen 111/total area of 1,553 hectares. Currently, Quynh Luu Irrigation Enterprise, material companies, and associated companies are coordinating with the commune to implement production.

In many communes of the old Thanh Chuong district, the yield of Thai Xuyen 111 rice is estimated at 7.4 tons/ha in the 2025 spring crop.

This year, ThaiBinh Seed continues to supply Thai Xuyen 111 variety to localities in Nghe An in the spring crop of 2026 with the goal of high yield and stable quality. In the last summer-autumn crop, despite the storms, the rice variety was assessed to have low lodging, good yield, and was favored by farmers. Mr. Pham Xuan Son - Director of ThaiBinh Seed's North Central Branch said that thanks to the good results from the Thai Xuyen 111 rice demonstration models, many communes in Nghe An province have included this variety in the mass production variety structure.

Thai Xuyen 111 is not simply a high-yield hybrid rice variety but also an important link in ThaiBinh Seed's crop variety strategy to improve the quality of rice production in the Northern and North Central provinces such as Nghe An, Thanh Hoa... areas with suitable soil at moderate altitude.

However, to maximize the potential of Thai Xuyen 111 in Nghe An and other provinces, there are still some points to note: This is an F1 hybrid variety, farmers cannot keep seeds for sowing the next crop, so the cost of seeds for each crop may increase, people need to receive additional support from ThaiBinh Seed; Regarding production techniques, to achieve high yields like the demonstration models (70-80 quintals/ha), people need to strictly follow the techniques of sowing, transplanting, fertilizing and pest control; Authorities also need to strengthen training programs so that farmers can master production techniques...
