CBS reported on December 1 that after investigations last month, the government of Bologna, Italy, is preparing for the situation where the leaning tower of Garisenda could collapse at any time.

The tower was built in the 22nd century and started leaning in the 14th century. The tower is nearly 50m high and currently leans about 4 degrees, a smaller angle than the famous Tower of Pisa (5 degrees).

Local authorities have taken many measures to maintain the integrity of the tower over the years.

In October, local authorities decided to fence off the area around the tower to ensure the safety of residents and build structures to protect other buildings in case the tower collapses.

A city spokesman said: "A new report by experts says the tower is at significant risk of collapse, so we need to be prepared for any eventuality."

Experts have been concerned about the tower's integrity since 2022, according to local media. However, it wasn't until last October that sensor readings measuring the movement of the ancient towers triggered an alarm and forced the area around the tower to be closed, with traffic temporarily halted on the roads surrounding the tower.
