Cold weather, be careful of stroke

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that the strengthening cold air combined with storm Than Gio will cause strong winds and heavy rain in the North and Central regions from October 22, in which mountainous areas will have temperatures below 16 degrees Celsius and coastal areas are at risk of flash floods and landslides.

Be careful of the cold weather changing seasons

Temperatures in the Northern and Central provinces range from 16 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius. People going out early should wear light jackets or long-sleeved shirts, children should wear hats and cover their respiratory tracts.

The characteristic of Hanoi autumn weather is dry and there is a big temperature difference between evening - night - early morning and noon and afternoon. Therefore, many people are susceptible to respiratory infections, colds, allergies...

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Dr. Doan Du Manh, a member of the Vietnam Vascular Disease Association, said that the change of seasons, especially when cold air suddenly comes in, often causes blood pressure to increase because the body reacts to the temperature difference.

Sudden changes in temperature in the morning and at night can put many people at risk of stroke if they are not careful.

According to Dr. Manh, sudden changes in temperature can cause vasoconstriction, increase blood pressure, easily leading to rupture of cerebral blood vessels causing cerebral hemorrhage or rupture of existing atherosclerotic plaques, forming blood clots causing cerebral infarction, myocardial infarction. The risk is especially high in people with underlying cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia, etc.

In addition to physiological factors, careless living habits in cold weather also contribute to increasing this risk. One of the mistakes that can increase the risk of stroke in the early morning is going out to exercise very early without wearing enough warm clothes.

"Many people think that it will be warm and sunny during the day, so they still wear light clothes early in the morning and go out to exercise while their body is still "hibernating". At that time, the blood is thicker, blood pressure increases, if they do not drink water, do not eat breakfast, exercise or suddenly breathe cold air, it is very easy to form blood clots in the blood vessels," Dr. Manh analyzed.

How to prevent stroke?

Dr. Manh shared that autumn and winter are completely different from summer. Morning temperatures often drop, and can drop rapidly by 5-7°C in just a few hours. If you do not keep yourself warm enough and do not prepare your body to adapt, you may encounter risks.

Doctor Thai Dam Dung, emergency department, 108 Central Military Hospital, also recommends that stroke can be prevented in the cold season with measures.

1. Keep your body warm : Keeping your body warm, especially your head and neck, in the cold season is very important. Be aware that sudden changes in temperature can cause heat shock. When participating in physical activities, you should wear many layers of clothing. When your body warms up after exercise, you can take off some and wear just enough to keep your body warm.

If you are doing activities outside in the cold and find yourself sweating, your body is overheating and is not well; especially for people with cardiovascular disease, it is best to rest, take off your jacket and go inside immediately.

2. Blood pressure control: Measure blood pressure regularly, especially for people with a history of high blood pressure.

3. Healthy diet: Eat lots of green vegetables and fruits, limit fat, sugar, and salt.

4. Regular exercise: Increase light physical activity 30 minutes a day to support cardiovascular health, but follow the principle of not overdoing it.

Because when it is cold, our body has to work harder than usual to maintain a stable body temperature. Therefore, walking faster than usual when the cold wind blows on the face and body is already an effort.

5. Limit alcohol and tobacco: These habits increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

6. Regular health check-ups : Proactively screen, detect early and promptly treat risk factors to prevent stroke in cold weather.
