Continuing the series of 47th ASEAN Summits and related Summits, on the morning of October 28, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh , ASEAN leaders and Chinese Premier Li Qiang attended the 28th ASEAN-China Summit.
Before the Summit, ASEAN and Chinese leaders witnessed the signing of the Protocol to Upgrade the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA 3.0). ASEAN and China are currently each other's leading trading partners, with total trade turnover of US$772.4 billion and FDI from China to ASEAN reaching US$19.3 billion by 2024.
The leaders agreed to designate 2026 as the “ASEAN-China Year” to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the establishment of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and requested the implementation of the 2026-2030 Action Plan, focusing on digital transformation, innovation, green economy , infrastructure connectivity, business and people-to-people exchanges.
Speaking at the Conference, in the spirit of solidarity as strength, cooperation for common benefits, dialogue and sharing to better understand each other, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed three strategic orientations to strongly promote ASEAN-China relations in the coming time: enhancing smart, inclusive and sustainable connectivity; enhancing innovation, creating new momentum for growth breakthroughs; consolidating strategic trust, maintaining regional peace and stability as a prerequisite for sustainable and inclusive development; ASEAN and China need to build the East Sea into a sea of peace, stability, cooperation and development, fully and effectively implement the DOC; soon achieve an effective and substantive COC in accordance with international law, including UNCLOS 1982, and harmonizing the legitimate interests of the parties./.
